'Why I Do This' - NATHAN MASON

Meet Nathan! 🤩👋

Former young person and now volunteer/sessional worker at Reaching Higher.

The year I was best boy for limitless camp. Because it was the year that I really set out to reflect the values and energy I received from RH. I think it’s such a big moment for me cuz I haven’t been the same since, my confidence has only grown more. I went from looking up to people like that with endless confidence and expression to being looked up to as that.

Q: What inspired you to get involved in volunteering with young people?

What inspired me to get involved was seeing the passion and care from the youth workers for the young people. I also wanted to give back to the community and make it better because I grew up going to after school/ youth clubs.

Q: Why Reaching Higher?

Why Reaching Higher specifically is because I’ve grown up them for a while and they have a type of vibe and energy that is unique; That energy often transfers to the young people and it creates a change in them. Another reason is that they have an uplifting type of integrity. For a lot of young people it can feel like our problems are unique to us alone and it can isolate us however with RH they’ll give a part of themselves, show you that you are not alone and they’ll support you.

Q: Can you share a specific success story or memorable moment from your time being a young person at Reaching Higher?

The year I was best boy for limitless camp. Because it was the year that I really set out to reflect the values and energy I received from RH. I think it’s such a big moment for me cuz I haven’t been the same since, my confidence has only grown more. Q: Can you describe some of the most rewarding experiences you've had while volunteering with young people?

It was during a recent limitless camp where I saw first hand the impact of the projects that RH provides. I was outside of the hall area on the last day when I saw a young person outside as well on their phone talking to what sounded like his friend. I wanted to stay with him a bit to see if was doing alright, then I heard him talking about how camp has changed his worldview, strengthened his faith and was convincing his friend to change too as it seemed like they were both from ends. it was amazing to see and has stuck with me since.

Q: What skills and qualities do you believe are essential for volunteering with young people?

I feel that integrity, passion, responsibility, respect, and empathy.

Q: What advice would you give to someone considering volunteering with young people for the first time?

Don’t be afraid to ask questions and don’t be afraid to share the load. The pressure of trying to do things on your own is hard so having someone with you to help and give you advice will make it easier.
